Home charging is one of the best parts of owning an EV — when it's installed right. Here's the straight story for Chicago homeowners.
Yes, you need a permit
A hardwired Level 2 charger (or a dedicated 240-volt outlet for a plug-in unit) requires a City of Chicago electrical permit and inspection. Skipping it might seem faster, but permitted, inspected work protects your home, your homeowner's insurance, and your resale value. We pull the permit and handle the inspection for you.
What a proper install involves
- A load calculation to confirm your panel can carry the new circuit
- A dedicated 240-volt, 40–60-amp circuit sized to your charger and vehicle
- A clean conduit run to the garage or parking pad
- Proper breaker, GFCI protection, and a tidy, code-compliant finish
- Permit + inspection
Will your panel handle it?
Many newer 200-amp panels have room for an EV circuit. But plenty of older Chicago homes still run on 100-amp service or a fuse box — those usually need a panel upgrade first. We'll run the numbers and tell you honestly whether you need one before quoting the charger.
Condos & HOAs
Charging in a condo or shared garage is very doable, but it involves the building: deeded vs. shared parking, where the circuit ties in, and sometimes sub-metering so you only pay for your own electricity. We coordinate with management and provide certificates of insurance.
What it costs
- Level 2 EV charger installation: $750–$2,500 (permit included)
- Add a panel upgrade if your service is maxed out, or for a long conduit run.
